Sensitive skin: What to avoid?

Understanding triggers + Choosing smarter skincare

If your skin often feels tight, burns when applying products, or flares up with redness and irritation—you're not alone. Sensitive skin is more common than ever and while it’s often manageable, it does require extra care and the right kind of knowledge.

As a Somatologist, I’ve helped many clients rebuild confidence in their skin. The first step? Knowing what to avoid.

What does “Sensitive Skin” really mean?

Sensitive skin isn’t a skin type—it’s a condition. That means any skin type (oily, dry, combination) can be sensitive when the skin barrier is weakened, inflamed, or overexposed to irritants.

Signs include:

  • Stinging, burning, or itching after product use
  • Redness, especially on cheeks or around the nose
  • Rough, flaky texture
  • Skin that reacts to weather changes or new environments
  • Breakouts that seem random or “angry”

Top ingredients & habits to avoid with sensitive skin

Here are the most common culprits behind flare-ups and skin stress:

1. Fragrance (synthetic or natural)

Even “natural” essential oils can be sensitizing. Fragrance is one of the top irritants for reactive skin.

Choose fragrance-free over unscented (they're not the same).

2. Alcohol-Based Products

Denatured alcohol (alcohol denat., SD alcohol 40) may give a fresh feeling but strips natural oils—leaving skin vulnerable.

Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin or panthenol instead.

3. Harsh Exfoliants

Scrubs with crushed shells or large granules cause micro-tears. Overuse of chemical exfoliants (like high % AHAs) can also worsen sensitivity.

Use gentle exfoliants like PHA or lactic acid once or twice a week—max.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

A foaming agent found in many cleansers and body washes. It’s incredibly drying and disruptive to the skin barrier.

Use sulfate-free, low-foam cleansers that respect your skin's pH.

5. Overuse of Actives

Retinol, Vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs… They’re powerful—but too much at once can tip your skin into chaos.

Slowly introduce actives into your skin protocol and buffer with a soothing moisturiser.

Somatologist advice: Daily do’s & don’ts

Do patch test new products before applying them to your entire face

Do simplify your skincare—less is more when your skin is reactive

Do hydrate generously with barrier-supportive ingredients

Don’t use boiling hot water on your face

Don’t switch routines too often—give your skin time to adjust

Don’t skip SPF—sun exposure makes sensitivity worse

Final thoughts: Listen to your skin

Your skin is always talking to you. If it’s reacting, stinging, or breaking out—pause. Strip back your routine, focus on healing and slowly reintroduce supportive ingredients.

With the right care and calm, sensitive skin can thrive.
